Back on 2003-2004, I was young and I wanted to travel really bad. I come from a country where the local currency is shit, so travelling around the world was a difficult dream to accomplish.
I was going through a difficult time and I was very depressed. I saw a psychiatrist who put me on heavy medication right away. It didn´t feel right. Medication didn´t feel like a solution, so I took them for a week and I stopped.
With my best friend we made the decision of moving out of the city. We moved to a quieter but very touristic city where we could have a fresh start.
That´s when I met Matt. He changed the game for me. We fell in love right away. He was living in my country only for a few months, trying to learn my language and experiencing my culture. He was my first boyfriend and it lasted 4 months.
When he left I was heartbroken. He knew that my dream was to travel, but I didn´t have any money to follow him
He put me in contact with his brother who worked at a ski resort in the US. Back in 2005, working visas were available for foreigners.
I got the job and that was a game changer for me. Worked my ass off for 4 months to save for the plane ticket. I packed my bags and took a 13 hours flight to beautiful California.
I was going to work at a ski resort, but you know what? It was the first time I was seeing snow. I wasn´t afraid, I was ready for the challenge.
That experienced lasted for 6 beautiful years. Lots of ups and downs of course, but I will never forget my days in Lake Tahoe.
